French matting, chance encounter

placeholder image

While recently in Newport, RI I couldn’t help noticing this framed vintage print in our hotel suite. The French matting grabbed me and reminded me of how much I appreciate this fine art. Its intent is to enhance the artwork and overall presence of design. Creating inked borders around the image draws the eye in with considerable effect.

As you can see in this picture, the multiple lines frame a band of watercolor wash that takes the matting to another level and truly enhances the overall presence of the print. This style of decorative matting evidently dates back to the 16th century, Italy, where from an architectural perspective the lined borders simulated altars and niches which created a visually appealing effect around drawings and engravings. It’s amazing that this style is still incorporated into custom framing today.

I feel that mastering this technique takes time and dedication, and when done correctly demonstrates a truly skilled professional framer that can indeed take the ordinary and create extraordinary.
